Lukwati and Piti are two reserves under one administration. Lukwati Game Reserve covering an area size of 3146.7 square kilometers was established in the year 1997 through a Government Notice No. 459. The Reserve is entirely located in Songwe District within Songwe Region on the South West of Tanzania. Lukwati Game Reserve was named after the name of Lukwati village which was demolished during the implementation of the Tanzania Villagization Policy in 1974.

Piti Game reserve covering an area of 2972.93 square kilometers was established in the year 2013 through the Government Notice Number 75. The entire area of Piti Game Reserve is located in Songwe District at Songwe Region on the South Western of Tanzania. Piti Game Reserve was named after the Piti River marking the boundary of the Game Reserve on the northeast side of the Reserve.



Lukwati and Piti Game Reserves lies from the North Eastern shores of Lake Rukwa, it climbs eastwards over the escarpment into the vast Miombo woodlands and is renowned for its excellent success-rate on heavy-maned Lions, big Buffalo, Sable and plentiful Leopard. Lukwati has a healthy combination of terrain and diversity of habitat including the lake, marshes, woodlands, rivers, open plains, rocky outcrops, and mountains, belts of thicket and numerous rivers and springs.

TOURISM ACTIVITIES

The area is set aside for tourist hunting with five (05) hunting blocks namely Lukwati South, Lukwati North, Piti West, Chunya Msami and Chunya Lukwati. These Game Reserve areas (Lukwati and Piti) are not only a superb Lion and big game hunting areas; but truly is the choice for the discerning sport hunters.




UNIQUE FEATURES

The widely available wildlife animals are Lion, Buffalo, Leopard, Elephant, Sable, Kudu, Roan, Eland, Hippo, Crocodile, Lichtenstein’s Hartebeest, Defassa Waterbuck, Zebra, Southern Reedbuck, Warthog, Oribi, Bush pig, Common Duiker, Impala, Hyena, and Jackal.

ACCOMMODATION 

The accommodations are basically from tented camps laid within the Reserve.

WHEN TO VISIT

The best time to visit the reserve is between July and December. The visitors will have the privilege to enjoy the accommodation from tented camps laid within the Reserve.

HOW TO GET THERE

The Gua Ranger Post is the place where the main entrance gate of Lukwati Game Reserve is located and it’s about 220km from Mbeya town. It can be accessed by scheduled flight from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya followed by a drive through the road from Mbeya via Chunya and Mkwajuni for about six (6) to eight (8) hours drive. The Reserve is also accessible by air charter flight from Dar es Salaam or Arusha to the seasonal airstrips available in the Game Reserve.
