Many intra- and inter-species interactions are a result of  differing population growth rates e.g. changes in a vegetation community  after fire.  Most models of population growth are based on quantitative models, requiring a good knowledge of mathematics.  Models of population growth will instill you with an understanding of the main concepts with a minimal use of mathematics.  But mathematics is a very important part of population modeling and cannot be avoided.
