UNDERSTANDING TOURISM

>To understand the interaction that exists between tourism and the environment, it is necessary to understand the complexity of tourism.
-Tourism is not just something that occurs in the environments of destinations overseas but is a function of interaction of different factors in contemporary society (Holden, 2000)

THE MEANING OF TOURISM
Difficult to define tourism because it is a highly complicated amalgam of various parts. These parts are a diverse range of factors to include:
>Human feelings

>Emotions & desires

>Attractions (natural & man-made/developed resources

>Suppliers of transport, accommodation and other services

>Government policy & regulatory frameworks

Definitions and types of tourism
>Is the study of people away from their usual habitat of the establishment which respond to the requirements of travellers, and of impact that they have on the economic, physical and social well being of their hosts ( Mathieson and Wall, 1982:1 )
-It is a human activity which encompasses human behavior, use of resources, and interaction with other people. Economies and environments (Bull, 1991: 1)

*A convenient definition which overcome this difficult is provided by WTO (1991) as:

The activities of a person travelling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business of other purposes.
From the WTO (1991):
>Tourism involves some elements of interaction with a different type of environment.
>The consequences of these interactions are referred to as ‘impacts of tourism’
Therefore,
[Tourism is based upon the economic and social processes that occurs in the environments of the societies where tourists originate from]
>Its development in destinations involves the use of physical and natural resources that subsequently impact upon the economies, cultures and ecology of destinations it develops in.

It was established as a game reserve in 1951 and upgraded to a national park in 2006. Mkomazi National Park has a truly spectacular wilderness! It provides a common base for migratory herds and has a classic arid areas. The park covers over 3,234 square kilometres (323,400 ha), and is dominated by Acacia-Commiphora vegetation; it is contiguous with Kenya's Tsavo West National Park. The area commonly called 'Mkomazi' is actually the union of two previous game reserves, the Umba Game Reserve in the east (in Lushoto District, Tanga Region) and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in the west (in Same District, Kilimanjaro Region); in government documents they are sometimes called the Mkomazi-Umba Game Reserves. Of the two, Mkomazi is larger, and has more diversity of relief and habitat, and a longer shared border with Tsavo West National Park. In the rest of this entry, ...
