Supporting Promotion of human-pangolin coexistence in wildlife corridors of Tanzania - PROJECT LED BY TRCO

Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization (TRCO) is a non-profit organization established in 30th December, 2021 under Non-Governmental Organization Act, 2002, operating in Tanzania mainland. The TRCO co-founded by Tanzanian experts from different disciplines and collaborate with international partners to support and promote conservation of both biodiversity and ecological landscapes on which all life depends in Tanzania.

Biological diversity in Tanzania is generally threatened at the alarming rate due to numerous factors including Climate change, Human Wildlife conflict, Illegal utilization of wildlife and forest resources, freshwater resources degradation, and unsustainable conversion of natural ecosystems into human modified land uses. Moreover, inadequate capacity for research to generate reliable information and data to advocacy conservation, limited public awareness on biodiversity and ecology and limited capacity in terms of financial resources to support conservation descending the conservation efforts.

Cognizant of this fact, Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization (TRCO) is dedicated to join hand in supporting and promoting biodiversity conservation in Tanzania through conduct of scientific research, capacity building, awareness creation and community engagement on sustainable conservation of biodiversity and landscape structures on which all life depends.

Our Vision

To see local communities coexist with biodiversity, utilize biodiversity and biodiversity resources sustainably, address climate change effects effectively, and their livelihood enhanced.

Our Mission

To provide knowledge, build capacity, involve local communities and link them with local, national, and international organizations for biodiversity research and conservation activities

Objectives

  1. Raising awareness to local communities about biodiversity research, ecology, and conservation.
  2. Empower the community on biodiversity research and conservation
  3. Promote research on ecology, trade, and monitoring of biodiversity
  4. Advocate local communities about climate change and its effects to biodiversity conservation and community livelihood improvement.
  5. Promote networking and partnership with local, national and international organizations in order to scale up biodiversity research and conservation

Project goal

To enhance understanding of the local use of pangolin derivatives and sensitize local communities on pangolin conservation in Tanzania using a case study of Kwakuchinja, Nyerere-Selous-Udzungwa, and Amani-Nilo landscapes. Kwakuchinja wildlife corridor is part of Manyara-Tarangire ecosystem, and this corridor connects Lake Manyara with Tarangire National Parks.

Nyerere-Selous-Udzungwa wildlife corridor is part of Selous-Mikumi-Udzungwa ecosystem in Southern Tanzania, and this corridor connects Udzungwa National Park with Nyerere National Park and Selous Gamae Reserve. Amani-Nilo wildlife corridor is part of Eastern Arc Mountains, and this corridor connects Amani Nature Reserve with Nilo Forest Reserve.

TRCO anticipates that findings and efforts from this project will guide participatory efforts to conserve pangolins, their habitat and combat pangolin trafficking in Tanzania. Tanzania Research and Conservation Organization is conducting this project in collaboration with USAID Tanzania through their USAID Tuhifadhi Maliasili Activity.

Tech-Driven Conservation: Protecting the Congo Basin Rainforest

The Congo Basin rainforest, the world’s second-largest tropical forest, plays a crucial role in global biodiversity and climate regulation.  Spanning over 500 million acres, it is home to diverse wildlife, including gorillas, forest elephants, and rare plant species.  Additionally, the rainforest acts as a major carbon sink, helping mitigate climate change. However, illegal logging, mining, and agricultural expansion pose significant threats to this fragile ecosystem. Technology is emerging as a powerful tool in the fight against deforestation and habitat destruction.  Advanced satellite imagery and AI-powered monitoring systems are being used to track illegal activities in real time, allowing conservationists to respond swiftly to environmental threats.  Drones are also being deployed for aerial surveillance, capturing high-resolution images to assess forest health and detect deforestation hotspots. Blockchain technology is revolutionizing supply chain transparency,...
