The aim of this lecture is to introduce you to the concepts around population growth by quantitatively describing the growth of a population over time to predict future numbers.
Understanding how populations increase can help wildlife managers predict and plan for future situations as well as understand how populations react to different factors. Many intra- and inter-species interactions are a result of differing population growth rates e.g. changes in a vegetation community after fire.
Most models of population growth are based on quantitative models, requiring a good knowledge of mathematics.
Models of population growth will instill you with an understanding of the main concepts with a
minimal use of mathematics.
But mathematics is a very important part of
population modeling and cannot be avoided.
There are 2 main models which describe population growth in a quantitative (i.e. mathematically based) manner. These are:
1. Unlimited growth models (Reproductive or Finite and Exponential
models)
2. Limited growth models (Logistic models)
